U.P. Congress delegation allowed to pray at Ram Temple after face-off with Ayodhya administration

In a sharp political confrontation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a pointed attack on the opposition Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) over the ongoing controversy surrounding the Ram Temple donation scandal. His remarks come amid growing tensions following the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that has uncovered initial evidence suggesting theft and financial misconduct related to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. The situation has escalated into a broader political conflict, with accusations flying in all directions and deepening divisions among major Indian political factions. Yogi Adityanath accused the opposition parties of mocking Hindu faith, a charge they themselves have previously levelled against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliated organizations. During a press interaction, Yogi emphasized how the opposition had remained silent on issues concerning the misuse of funds meant for religious sites, particularly when it came to the allocation of land for commercial purposes rather than for the benefit of the poor. He highlighted how the sale of land in the name of the Wakf had deprived the economically disadvantaged of opportunities for housing, business, and infrastructure development. Yogi further questioned why the opposition had not spoken out earlier when similar actions were taken against Hindu interests, citing examples such as the construction of boundaries for Muslim graveyards using funds donated by Hindus and the operation of illegal slaughterhouses that violated religious sentiments. The SIT's preliminary findings suggest that there were multiple instances of alleged theft and financial impropriety during the counting of donations at the Ram Temple. The investigation reviewed CCTV footage, testimonies from trust officials, bank representatives, security personnel, and counting staff, alongside bank records, seizure documents, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing the process. The footage captured approximately 70 cases where counting personnel concealed bundles of currency notes and loose cash in various parts of their clothing, pockets, shoes, and other hidden areas. In several instances, other employees were seen assisting or shielding these activities. Based on discrepancies between the amount of cash counted and the subsequent bank deposits, the SIT believes similar incidents might have occurred prior to April 27, though the lack of older CCTV footage limited the ability to assess the full scope of such occurrences. According to the SIT report, the prescribed security measures outlined in the trust's SOPs—including frisking procedures, biometric attendance, restrictions on personal items, and continuous CCTV monitoring—were not adequately enforced. These lapses in security protocols appear to have contributed to the environment in which the alleged thefts took place. The report underscores the need for stricter adherence to established guidelines to prevent future occurrences of such misconduct. BJP National President Nitin Nabin joined the fray, condemning the opposition for historically undermining Sanatan Dharma and opposing the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Speaking at a gathering of BJP workers in Lucknow, Nabin accused Congress and the SP of questioning the existence of Lord Ram, submitting affidavits to the Supreme Court that described him as a fictional character, and challenging the authenticity of Ram Setu. He emphasized that these parties had previously resisted the Ram Temple movement and should not now be given the platform to criticize the faith associated with the temple. Nabin reiterated the BJP's commitment to protecting the sanctity of Hindu beliefs, stating that no one would be allowed to harm the sentiments of devotees, even if it required sacrificing lives. Nabin also recounted the historical involvement of his late father, who had participated in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement as a kar sevak and endured imprisonment for two months. He contrasted this with the current stance of the opposition, asserting that the BJP's legacy is rooted in sacrifices made to protect Hindu faith, unlike the opposition's record marked by violence against Hindus. He called on BJP workers to remain vigilant and strive for electoral success in the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, emphasizing unity and dedication to the party's goals. As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the SIT's ongoing investigations and the potential legal consequences for those implicated in the alleged thefts.
