Two Brits plunge 20ft to their deaths as Lanzarote hotel handrail collapses

Two British men, Darren Silcox and Nicholas Thomas, both from Cwmbran, Wales, died after falling approximately 20 feet from a balcony at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. The incident occurred in October 2025 during the early hours of the morning following a night out. Darren Silcox, 56, died shortly after the fall, while Nicholas Thomas, 54, was hospitalized in Spain and later transferred to University Hospital in Llandough, Wales, where he passed away nearly 10 months later on July 10, 2026. Spanish authorities have initiated an investigation to determine if poor maintenance or inadequate safety measures contributed to the collapse of the handrail. An inquest into Nicholas Thomas' death was opened by Gwent Coroner Rose Farmer, who stated he fell between 15 and 22 feet after the wooden bannister collapsed. The inquest into Darren Silcox's death previously concluded that he died from traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and lacerations. The inquests are set to proceed jointly in April 2027.
