Trump taps Heidi Overton as FDA commissioner

President Donald Trump has nominated Heidi Overton, a senior White House adviser, to serve as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The announcement came on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment for the regulatory body, which has faced internal instability following the abrupt departure of its previous leader, Dr. Marty Makary, earlier this year. At the event, she spoke about the proposed changes, which include reducing the number of federally mandated shots and allowing parents to split the MMR vaccine into three separate doses. “We do still recommend the measles vaccine for all children, but we want parents to be informed about the timing and to have the option to separate them out,” she said. However, some analysts have expressed concerns about Overton’s qualifications for leading the FDA. Raymond James analyst and former Trump health official Chris Meekins criticized her lack of direct management experience, stating that her primary recognition stems from being a protégé of Makary, who has been associated with anti-science and anti-vaccine rhetoric. Meekins warned that the pharmaceutical industry might view Overton’s appointment as problematic, potentially reversing recent efforts to restore trust between the FDA and industry stakeholders. In contrast, Brian Blase, president of the Paragon Health Institute, endorsed Overton’s nomination, praising her character and commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for Americans. “Heidi has the highest character and is dedicated to improving American well-being and helping American patients get the best possible care,” Blase wrote on X. The nomination is likely to face scrutiny from members of Congress, particularly Senator Bill Cassidy, the outgoing chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Cassidy previously criticized the executive order related to vaccine schedules, calling it “wrong.” His reaction to Overton’s involvement in the event could influence the legislative process surrounding her confirmation.
