Trump announces the creation of a space military academy: American dominance is not an election

President Donald Trump announced Friday the creation of a new space military academy, emphasizing that U.S. dominance in space is not optional but essential. The executive order was signed during a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where Trump also presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to four astronauts who were part of the Artemis 2 crew. He stated, “U.S. leadership in this domain is not a choice, it's a necessity for economic strength and national security. A nation cannot be first on Earth if it is second in space.” The academy, whose location will be revealed soon, is being compared by Trump to existing U.S. military institutions such as West Point, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy. He explained that the institution will serve the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and civilian aviation to train and graduate the best talent the country has to offer. “Space is in fashion,” he added, linking the development of the space program with U.S. military ambitions. “When you think about what we do here, the military plays a big role at levels no one would imagine. We get much of our information for the military from space.” As an example, Trump cited the January operation to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, which took 48 minutes and relied heavily on space-based intelligence. “All attacks were successful and counted on space support. Who would have thought?” he remarked. Before presenting the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, members of the Artemis 2 crew who completed a 10-day lunar orbit mission in April, Trump promised that humanity will return to the Moon before his presidency ends in 2028, more than half a century after Apollo 17 in 1972. “We’re going to have a colony. In fact, they're building it up there on the Moon,” he said. Additionally, he mentioned that NASA has already begun work on the first nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft, set to launch in 2028 on a Mars mission. Jared Isaacman, administrator of NASA, expressed enthusiasm over the agency’s direction, calling it “energized” and “determined to do extraordinary things both inside and outside the atmosphere.” Regarding the planned return to the Moon through the Artemis 4 mission in 2028, he affirmed: “This time, we’re coming back to stay.” The announcement reflects a broader strategy to solidify American influence in space, aligning military and civilian efforts under a unified vision. With plans for a lunar colony and interplanetary travel, the United States aims to maintain its technological and strategic edge in the evolving space race.
