UAAn investigation by Which? Travel has revealed that Tripadvisor’s AI review system may be misleading travelers by omitting negative feedback about hotel hygiene and food safety. Specifically, the AI tool used to summarize guest reviews for a five-star hotel, Riu Palace in Cape Verde, failed to include complaints about food poisoning and poor hygiene, despite numerous reports from guests. These included instances of guests being served spoiled food, finding insects in meals, and even family members falling ill during their stay. Over 100 similar complaints were identified on Tripadvisor. While Riu Hotels & Resorts claims to adhere to strict health and hygiene standards, at least 412 tourists have filed a collective lawsuit alleging illness after staying there, with seven deaths reported since 2023.
