Restricted traffic on the Basarab Passage. What changes occur for drivers and public transport

Traffic restrictions have been imposed on Basarab Boulevard in Bucharest following the appearance of a crack in the road surface. Starting from Thursday at midnight, traffic on the section of the boulevard heading from Câmpia Libertății Street towards Nicolae Grigorescu Boulevard has been restricted due to repair work aimed at addressing the crack and preventing the risk of pavement collapse. According to a statement issued by Bucharest's Road Brigade, these measures will remain in effect until the interventions are completed and all deficiencies have been addressed. The brigade advises drivers to avoid traveling in the area, drive with increased caution, maintain safe distances, follow temporary traffic signs, and heed the instructions of on-site police officers.

The restrictions were implemented after a crack was discovered in the road, prompting immediate action to ensure safety and prevent potential structural failure. This decision follows similar incidents elsewhere in the city, such as recent restrictions on DN1 near IKEA Passage due to the risk of a streetlight pole collapsing. These types of infrastructure issues highlight ongoing concerns about the condition of roads in urban areas and the need for regular maintenance and monitoring.

Starting from Monday, June 29, traffic on Basarab Passage between Nicolae Titulescu Avenue and Grozăvești Avenue has also been restricted, allowing only one lane of traffic. This measure is part of broader repair works currently underway in the area, which are expected to continue into the future. From August onwards, the construction activities will shift to the other side of the passage, redirecting traffic accordingly. Beginning in September, when traffic volume is likely to increase with the start of the new school year, certain sections of the road will be temporarily closed.

The repairs involve removing scaffolding, cleaning concrete elements, repairing cracks that have developed over the years, and clearing the tram tracks and all upper and lower components of the passage. A week after the start of the works, significant progress had already been made, including the installation of scaffolding and the removal of debris. Workers are focusing on preparing the area for necessary repairs while ensuring minimal disruption to daily commutes.

To accommodate changes in traffic patterns during the construction period, starting from June 20, tram lines 4 and 11 have been suspended and replaced by line 54, which operates between Alexandria Depot and Zetarilor – Șura Mare. Line 44 will run with additional vehicles, and lines 1 and 10 will have altered routes. Additionally, shuttle bus line 610 has been introduced to provide connections between the City Hall of Sector 1, Basarab Passage, Leul Square, Danny Huwe Square, and Progres Street. Normal tram operations are expected to resume by September 1.

These adjustments reflect efforts to manage traffic flow effectively during the construction phase while maintaining essential transportation services. The project aims to complete most of the work by summer, taking advantage of reduced traffic volumes to expedite progress without causing excessive inconvenience to commuters. As the city continues to address infrastructure challenges, such coordinated planning and implementation of temporary solutions play a crucial role in ensuring both safety and functionality of urban mobility systems.
