Chinese regulators have mandated that all new vehicles must include physical buttons for critical functions, marking a reversal of the trend toward fully digital interiors in automobiles. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced this requirement, which could come into effect as early as July 2027. This decision aims to enhance driver safety by reducing distractions caused by touchscreen interfaces, which have become prevalent in modern cars. The directive requires automakers to provide physical controls for essential features such as lighting, gear shifting, electronic driver aids, windshield and rear window defrosting, and emergency functions like power-off switches for electric vehicles. Additionally, any function related to safety, including windshield wipers, must have a dedicated button. Each physical button must have a minimum surface area of 10 mm square to ensure ease of access and usability. Regulators will monitor compliance and assess the effectiveness of these controls. This regulatory shift is expected to significantly impact Chinese automakers, many of whom have heavily relied on large touchscreens for nearly all user interactions. Brands such as Xpeng, Jaecoo, and Chery frequently utilize touchscreens for primary controls. However, some leading manufacturers like BYD and MG, which are popular in European and Irish markets, have already incorporated more physical buttons into their designs. Tesla, known for its minimalist approach to interior design, stands to face considerable challenges under these new rules. The company has minimized physical controls in its vehicles, relying instead on on-screen interfaces for tasks such as gear selection. This move by Chinese authorities may compel Tesla to reconsider its design philosophy and incorporate more tangible controls into its models. The push for physical buttons aligns with similar concerns raised by safety organizations in Europe. Euro NCAP, a European safety organization, has indicated that vehicles lacking physical controls might not achieve top safety ratings in the future. Although there are currently no specific regulations in the EU regarding in-car buttons, Euro NCAP emphasizes the importance of minimizing driver distraction through effective control layouts. Ferrari's CEO, Benedetto Vigna, highlighted the economic incentives behind the adoption of touchscreen technology during an interview with Autocar India. He noted that touch buttons are approximately 50% cheaper to produce compared to traditional physical buttons. Despite this cost advantage, Vigna discussed the potential for a hybrid approach combining both physical and digital elements, referring to it as "phygital." This concept is set to debut in Ferrari's upcoming all-electric vehicle, the Luce, designed by renowned figures such as Jony Ive and Marc Newson. Jony Ive, who has worked on Apple products like the iPhone and iPad, expressed reservations about using exclusively touchscreen controls in vehicles. During the Luce launch event, he emphasized that requiring drivers to look away from the road for control purposes poses significant risks. His comments underscore the growing recognition among automotive designers and engineers that physical buttons can offer safer alternatives to digital interfaces. As the automotive industry navigates these regulatory changes, manufacturers will need to balance cost considerations with safety requirements.
