Tokyo firm to set starting salary for new graduates at ¥1 mil per month

A Tokyo-based real estate development company, Kasumigaseki Capital Co., plans to offer new graduate hires a starting monthly salary of 1 million yen beginning in April 2027. This salary is significantly higher than the national average of approximately 262,300 yen for new university graduates in Japan. The company aims to attract individuals with skills in entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence by offering compensation based on individual abilities and market value. Over 1,300 applicants have already applied for these positions, with only around 10 expected to receive job offers. The company’s senior vice president noted that such a salary is standard in European and American contexts and hopes this approach will encourage more Japanese firms to adopt ability-based pay systems to retain talent.
