A study suggests that kimchi, a traditional fermented vegetable dish, might help reduce the amount of nanoplastic in the digestive system due to beneficial bacteria present in it. The research, published in the scientific journal Bioresource Technology, tested whether certain bacteria from kimchi could bind to nanoplastic particles before they are absorbed by the body. Laboratory tests showed that the bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656 was able to bind up to 87% of polystyrene nanoparticles. Animal experiments also indicated that mice receiving this bacterium excreted more nanoplastic through their feces compared to a control group. However, experts caution that these findings do not prove that consuming kimchi cleans the body of plastic, as the study was conducted in laboratory conditions and on animal models. Human clinical trials are necessary to verify if the same bacteria can function effectively in the complex human digestive system.
