Tiruppur woman dies after botched YouTube-assisted childbirth at home

A 32-year-old woman from Tiruppur district in Tamil Nadu died on Sunday due to post-partum haemorrhage and related complications after giving birth at home on June 24. According to police reports, the woman, K. Sasikala, was assisted during the delivery by her husband, Kolanthasamy, and his mother-in-law, who reportedly watched YouTube videos on natural childbirth. Following complications, she was taken to a private hospital in Coimbatore but succumbed to her injuries without responding to treatment. The police registered a case against her husband under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing culpable homicide not amounting to murder. However, the woman's family reportedly did not wish to file a formal complaint, stating they had planned for a home birth. The Health Department confirmed the newborn was healthy and noted that the woman was not registered in their maternal and infant care tracking system, PICME. Investigations are ongoing.
