Tinubu inherited significant economic challenges – Minister

President Bola Tinubu inherited significant economic challenges upon assuming office, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. Speaking at the South-East Regional Security Summit in Umuahia, Idris outlined the complex financial and structural issues the administration faced. These included fiscal pressures, declining revenues, exchange rate distortions, and long-standing structural weaknesses that had hindered economic growth for years. The summit, held under the auspices of the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Defence, was hosted by the Abia State Government. It brought together a wide array of stakeholders, including government officials, security personnel, traditional leaders, community representatives, political figures, professionals, and young people. The gathering focused on addressing security concerns while promoting regional development and stability. In his address, Idris emphasized that President Tinubu's administration has been implementing major reforms to restore economic strength. These efforts include improving infrastructure, increasing business opportunities, and enhancing national competitiveness. He highlighted the president’s decision to remove fuel subsidies and reform the foreign exchange market as part of a strategy to foster transparency, productivity, and an investment-friendly environment. The minister acknowledged that such reforms carry responsibilities and have led to ongoing interventions aimed at supporting Nigerians. These include programs for small businesses, consumer credit initiatives, student financing, and social protection measures. Idris stressed the goal of building an economy where production increases, enterprises grow, and opportunities expand for all citizens. A stable South-East region, he noted, is essential for attracting investment. President Tinubu remains committed to fostering a Nigeria where each region can achieve its potential and citizens enjoy a brighter future. The government’s message is clear: every Nigerian should have the rights to live, work, and thrive in a secure environment. Security challenges in the South-East, like elsewhere in the nation, demand a multifaceted response. This includes robust law enforcement, intelligence-based operations, active community involvement, economic empowerment, and development. Idris pointed out that President Tinubu has strengthened Nigeria’s security framework by providing better resources to security agencies, improving their operational capabilities, and enhancing coordination between federal, state, and local authorities. The Federal Government recognizes that enduring solutions require sustained effort and cooperation. By combining security improvements with economic development, the administration aims to create a foundation for long-term stability and progress.
