Tinubu unveils lithium plant in Nasarawa

President Bola Tinubu officially launched the largest lithium processing plant in West Africa during a ceremony held in Nasarawa State, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria's efforts to transform its mineral resources into economic assets. The facility, situated in the Endo community within Nasarawa Local Government Area, boasts a daily processing capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes and an annual capacity of 3,000,000 metric tonnes. This development underscores the federal government's strategy to pivot from mere resource extraction to localized value creation, aiming to stimulate job generation and foster industrial expansion.

At the inauguration, Tinubu was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who emphasized the significance of the plant as a testament to the government's dedication to advancing the solid minerals sector through local value addition. The President highlighted that while natural resources can be a boon, true prosperity stems from visionary planning, robust institutions, industriousness, and skilled labor. He underscored the necessity for Nigeria to evolve from exporting raw minerals to manufacturing finished products, thereby enhancing economic resilience and self-sufficiency.

The facility, operated by an unnamed company, has already generated over 1,000 direct jobs and more than 2,000 indirect jobs since its commencement. This aligns with the government's broader initiative to bolster local industries and reduce reliance on foreign imports. The inauguration follows reports of a substantial mineral discovery in Kaduna State, where a polymetallic deposit rich in platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, lithium, and rare earth elements was identified. This finding, confirmed by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, positions Nigeria as a key player in the global critical minerals market.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, lauded the project as a milestone in the implementation of policies promoting local value addition. He noted that the plant exemplifies the government's commitment to transforming Nigeria's mining landscape, ensuring that raw materials are processed domestically to yield higher economic returns. Alake also pointed out that several African nations are adopting similar strategies, indicating a regional trend toward sustainable and economically beneficial mineral utilization.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State expressed gratitude for the investment, highlighting the state's diverse mineral reserves including lithium, lead, zinc, copper, gold, iron ore, gemstones, and marble. He encouraged further exploration and investment in the region, emphasizing its agricultural potential as well. Sule's proactive approach has positioned Nasarawa as a model for responsible extractive industry development, drawing attention to the synergy between effective governance and economic growth.
