Indonesia has intensified digital surveillance and cross-sectoral security measures in response to reports that its citizens are being recruited online to serve as foreign mercenaries. This escalation follows diplomatic protests lodged by Jakarta, which demanded that Russia stop recruiting Indonesian nationals into its armed forces after an Indonesian citizen reportedly died while serving with Russian military units in Ukraine. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria stated that authorities are coordinating with the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs to monitor external social media channels facilitating such recruitment. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang confirmed that Indonesia has formally requested Moscow to exempt Indonesian citizens from recruitment drives, while the embassy in Moscow verifies the details of the reported casualty. Additionally, domestic authorities are evaluating whether these overseas job postings constitute human trafficking and have issued safety advisories warning citizens against unverified high-paying employment offers.
