Rok Tičar is moving to Slovakia

Rok Tičar, a veteran Slovenian hockey forward, has signed with HC Banska Bystrica, a top-tier team in Slovakia's Tipsport League. The move marks his return to Slovak ice hockey after more than a decade away. Tičar will join the club ahead of the upcoming season, bringing with him extensive experience and a track record of success in European leagues. The 37-year-old player spent over six seasons in the ICE Hockey League before deciding to pursue new opportunities in Slovakia. His career has spanced across several of Europe’s premier leagues, including Germany’s DEL, Sweden’s SHL, and the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He previously played for Slovan Bratislava in the KHL during two seasons, making a notable impact there. Now, he will bring that expertise to Banska Bystrica, which finished fourth in the Tipsport League last season and reached the quarterfinals. Julius Koval, the sports director of HC Banska Bystrica, emphasized the significance of Tičar’s signing. “We were looking for an experienced and creative center,” Koval stated. “We wanted to ensure we made the right decision regarding this position. We are glad we managed to agree with Rok Tičar. I believe we can rely on his leadership and playing abilities. He is exceptionally talented, as confirmed by his performance being the most productive player on the Slovenian national team at the last World Championship.” In his most recent season, Tičar played a crucial role for Pustertal, helping them reach the semifinals of the ICEHL and subsequently the finals against Graz99ers. His contributions were instrumental in securing a place in the championship game, where they ultimately lost to Graz99ers. This performance highlighted his ability to deliver under pressure and contribute significantly to his team’s success. Tičar’s professional career spans nearly two decades, during which he has played for some of the most prestigious clubs in Europe. Starting in Jesenice, he moved to Germany’s DEL, where he played for Krefeld and Kölner Haie. Later, he joined the KHL, playing in Sweden and other countries. His time with Slovan Bratislava left a lasting impression, particularly during their participation in the KHL. A significant portion of Tičar’s career has been dedicated to the Slovenian national team. He has participated in multiple world championships and Olympic Games, including the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Even in recent years, he remained one of the key players in Slovenia’s elite squad, contributing both offensively and defensively. Over the past few seasons, Tičar primarily played in the ICEHL, where he helped KAC win the league title in the 2020/21 season. He later played for Vienna Capitals, Graz99ers, and Pustertal. In the previous season, he recorded 46 points in 60 games with Pustertal, leading the team to the finals of the ICEHL. For Tičar, joining HC Banska Bystrica represents a return to Slovak hockey after more than ten years since leaving Bratislava. The club expects him to take on a leadership role in the offense and contribute to the team’s ambitions for results.
