Thousands march along road where woman was allegedly raped

The woman, who hails from Brookfield in Brisbane's western suburbs, was reportedly out walking on Thursday morning when she was allegedly attacked by Jacob Dave Henry Hauraki, 32. According to police reports, Hauraki approached the woman from behind along Brookfield Road and dragged her into nearby bushes. He allegedly assaulted her for some time before she managed to fight him off. She fled through a nearby creek and into the surrounding bushland, ultimately reaching the Brookfield Showgrounds to seek assistance. Hauraki was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after returning to the crime scene. He is currently in custody pending further legal proceedings. His court appearance took place on Friday, during which he did not apply for bail. His case has been adjourned until September 18. Emily Hall, who coordinated the march, emphasized the importance of solidarity with the victim and raising awareness about the issue of gender-based violence. The event attracted significant public attention, with local politicians including State MP Dr Christian Rowan, Councillor Greg Adermann, and Labor MP Jonty Bush joining the procession. Rowan expressed that while the community was shocked by the incident, they remained united in their resolve to address such crimes. She stated that although the march could not undo what had transpired, it served as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue about safety and the broader issue of violence against women.
