A new device called Autonomous Key aims to help users resist the urge to overuse their most addictive apps by requiring a physical action to unlock them. Priced at $9, the NFC key pairs with a companion app to allow users to lock specific apps on their smartphones. Unlike traditional screen-time management tools, which rely on user self-discipline and notifications, Autonomous Key forces users to physically scan the key with their phone to regain access to locked apps. Each unlock session lasts up to 60 minutes before the apps are automatically locked again. The product was launched earlier this month following a successful Kickstarter campaign and is currently in beta. It measures approximately three inches in length and is compatible with Android 8.0 or newer and iOS 15 or newer. The key comes in five color options, pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown, and can be paired with multiple devices, making it suitable for individuals or families. The companion app includes AI-powered insights that track usage patterns, such as how frequently users unlock apps, how long they stay accessible, and peak times of engagement. These insights are delivered in a tone described as “sassily” encouraging, offering personalized feedback based on behavior. One of the main advantages of Autonomous Key is its affordability compared to similar products. Competitors like Blok, priced at $29, and Unpluq, at $26.50, offer comparable functionality but at higher costs. Brick, another competitor, includes additional features such as Sleep Mode and blocking in-app purchases, but Autonomous Key focuses on delivering essential functions at a lower price point. There are no subscription fees or premium tiers, allowing users to access all features without ongoing payments. However, some limitations exist. During testing, the NFC scanning process sometimes required multiple attempts to register, which could be inconvenient for users needing frequent access to critical apps like messaging or email. Additionally, if the key is lost, the current solution involves uninstalling and reinstalling the companion app to reset access. A backup unlock method is under development and is expected in a future software update. The app blocker is designed to transform impulsive app use into a conscious act. By placing the key in another room or leaving it at work, users must make a deliberate effort to access their favorite apps, potentially reducing mindless scrolling. This approach contrasts with digital-only solutions that depend on user motivation and timely notifications, which can easily be ignored. Autonomous Key is positioned as a practical alternative for those seeking to manage screen time without relying solely on self-control. Its design emphasizes simplicity and accessibility, while the AI-driven insights aim to provide actionable data to improve user habits.
