The women behind Hyde Park Corner’s giant scarf chandelier and the scarves warming strangers

The Secret Scarves Shh... campaign, initiated a decade ago by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, has evolved into a nationwide movement of compassion in South Africa. Volunteers, known as the KnitWits of 67 Blankets, create handmade scarves that are placed in public spaces for those in need. To commemorate its 10th anniversary on Mandela Day (July 18), the campaign will unveil a giant scarf chandelier made entirely of these handmade scarves at Hyde Park Corner’s Centre Court during the Yarn by Design Expo. Each scarf includes a message of care and bears the tag 'I AM NOT LOST.' The event will include interactive installations and opportunities for visitors to participate in knitting or donating materials. Over 200,000 handmade blankets and scarves have been distributed globally since the organization’s founding in 2013.
