The United States is witnessing a sharp escalation in enforcement actions under the Trump administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, with reports of increased detentions targeting undocumented immigrants and individuals with expired visas. This intensified campaign comes amid broader international focus on other issues, including tensions with Iran and the U.S.'s involvement in hosting the FIFA World Cup. In recent weeks, ICE agents have been actively rounding up individuals in airports, workplaces, and public spaces, drawing widespread public scrutiny and concern. On 20 July, a video surfaced showing ICE agents forcibly removing a 27-year-old au pair from a jetway in Denver as she attempted to board a flight to California. Similar incidents have occurred in check-in lines, arrival areas, and baggage claim sections of airports across the nation, with passengers documenting these encounters and sharing them online. These actions have raised questions about the legality and proportionality of such operations, particularly in light of the high number of detainees. According to official figures, ICE arrested 43,138 individuals in June alone, bringing the total number of migrants held nationwide to nearly 66,000 as of 11 July. The White House has set a daily detention goal of at least 2,000 people, with some reports suggesting higher targets. New Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin appears to be aligning closely with these directives. Data from the Department of Homeland Security indicate that 70.6 percent of those detained have no known criminal records, contradicting President Trump's characterization of them as "the worst of the worst." This discrepancy has sparked unease among communities that initially supported Trump's hardline stance on immigration. The San Antonio Express-News, a prominent publication in conservative South Texas, criticized the administration for policies that disrupt families, create labor shortages, and disproportionately affect law-abiding residents who have overstayed their visas or entered without proper documentation. Public discontent has been further fueled by the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican man who had resided in the U.S. for 35 years. On 7 July, Araujo was shot dead by an ICE officer while driving to work at a construction site. The officer claimed Araujo was using his vehicle as a weapon, but investigators found that the agents involved did not have body cameras activated, which are required during traffic stops. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare has alleged that ICE is obstructing the investigation into Araujo's death and has initiated legal measures to prevent the deportation of three passengers in Araujo's car, who are key witnesses. Meanwhile, another incident involving a fatal shooting by federal agents has drawn attention in the northeastern region of the country. On 13 July, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian man, was shot dead by federal agents during a traffic stop. A neighbor reported that Guerrero was heading to work when the encounter took place. His car was reportedly struck by an ICE vehicle, leading to the tragic outcome. The circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation, adding to the growing list of concerns regarding the conduct of ICE agents and the potential risks faced by undocumented immigrants.
