Fiji has emerged as an unexpected stopover hotspot for travelers heading to North America, thanks to new route expansions by Fiji Airways. The island nation, long a favorite among Australian tourists, is now being positioned as a strategic layover point for those flying between Australia and the United States or Canada. This shift is highlighted by the inaugural direct flight from the Gold Coast to Nadi, which opened new possibilities for travelers seeking both relaxation and meaningful engagement with local communities. The journey begins with a flight from the Gold Coast to Nadi, the main international gateway to Fiji. For many, this marks the start of a three-night stay designed to offer a balance of rest, recreation, and contribution to the local environment. One traveler chose to stay at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast, a choice influenced by its prime location on one of the country's most stunning beaches and its dedication to sustainability and community projects. The resort offers a private check-in lounge for guests staying in Club Suites or Villas, allowing for a seamless transition from air travel to leisure. Upon arrival, the guest was transported via golf buggy to a ground-floor suite, offering immediate access to the resort’s amenities. The following days were spent enjoying the facilities, including an infinity pool overlooking Natadola Bay, and indulging in curated experiences such as high tea sessions and canapés. Another highlight of the trip included exploring the Bula Coffee initiative, a community-focused enterprise that sources beans from wild coffee trees in the highlands. A guided tour at Bula Coffee, located just 20 minutes from the resort, offered insight into the entire process from harvesting to roasting. The tour began with a French press demonstration, showcasing the rich aroma and earthy flavor of the locally produced coffee. Guide Ronny Namata explained that the beans are sourced from naturally growing wild trees, avoiding deforestation and chemical use. This sustainable approach supports over 5,000 individuals across 38 villages, reflecting the broader impact of such enterprises on local economies.
