The meeting brought together representatives from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). The goal of this tripartite partnership is to foster long-term collaboration in the fields of critical minerals exploration, advanced mineral technologies, and related industrial applications. The state government aims to position Telangana as a hub for critical minerals research and innovation. This effort comes amid a growing demand for these resources due to their essential role in emerging industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, battery storage systems, and electronics. Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka emphasized that Telangana will transition from being a mere consumer of critical minerals to becoming a strategic partner in the global supply chain. To achieve this, the collaboration will focus on exploring, extracting, processing, and refining critical minerals, as well as developing methods for recovering these valuable resources from industrial waste. Vikramarka urged the participating institutions to draft an action plan for the proposed partnership as soon as possible. He assured them of the state government's full support and cooperation in transforming Telangana into a center for cutting-edge research and technological development. A key component of this initiative is the strengthening of the Centre of Excellence at IIT Hyderabad, which will serve as a platform for advanced research and innovation in the field of critical minerals. The partnership includes contributions from several key figures. D. Krishna Bhaskar, the Deputy Chief Minister’s Special Secretary and Chairman of TG-Transco, joined Prof. Yannis Ventikos, Dean of Engineering at Monash University. Professors Mohan Yellishetty and Raman Singh, founders of the Australia, India Critical Minerals Research Hub, were also present alongside senior officials from SCCL. Their involvement underscores the commitment of both academic and industry leaders to this collaborative effort. In addition to the discussion on critical minerals, the meeting included a separate activity where Vikramarka presented a cheque for ₹1 crore to Boda Swathi, the wife of B. Shankar Reddy, a Grade-II employee who died in an accident while working at a substation in Huzurabad. The incident occurred on October 1, 2025, and the compensation marks the state government's response to the loss of a public servant. This dual focus highlights the multifaceted approach of the Telangana government, balancing economic development with social responsibility. As the state moves forward with its plans for critical minerals research, the success of this partnership will depend on the ability of the involved institutions to translate theoretical advancements into practical solutions that can meet the increasing demands of modern technology and sustainable development.
