The facility, named 'Aerobrew,' works with a startup called Metafuels and uses sustainable methods involving water, renewable energy, and captured carbon dioxide to create methanol, which is then converted into synthetic jet fuel. While the current production capacity is small, only 50 liters per day, the goal is to scale up to 100 tons per day by 2030 through a planned large-scale plant in Rotterdam. Researchers emphasize that while the technology is promising, the high cost of sustainable fuel currently makes it uncompetitive with traditional kerosine. The European Union has introduced mandates requiring airlines to blend increasing percentages of sustainable fuels into their operations, aiming to drive adoption despite economic challenges.
