Ripples of JU clash reaches Presidency University and Midnapore College

A violent confrontation erupted at Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Wednesday night, leaving students injured and university property damaged. According to reports, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) stormed the campus in large numbers, vandalizing parts of the institution and setting fire to flags belonging to the Students Federation of India (SFI). The incident occurred around midnight and continued into Thursday morning, with students reportedly trapped inside the main building, Aurobindo Bhaban, until early Thursday. The conflict began earlier in the week during a general body meeting at Jadavpur University, where tensions between ABVP and SFI members had already been rising. On Wednesday night, ABVP members allegedly entered the campus en masse, leading to widespread damage and chaos. Witnesses described scenes of destruction, including broken windows and burned flags, while some students were forced to remain indoors until security personnel arrived to restore order. By Friday, the unrest had spread beyond Jadavpur University. At Midnapore College, SFI supporters organized a rally to protest the violence at Jadavpur University. Their demonstration quickly turned confrontational when ABVP members arrived and opposed the event. Both groups engaged in a physical altercation, with reports indicating that several individuals were involved in the scuffle. Local television channels and social media platforms broadcast footage of the clash, showing students from both factions exchanging blows and shouting slogans. At Presidency University, similar tensions emerged later in the day. As students prepared posters in support of their counterparts at Jadavpur University, ABVP members gathered outside the gates, raising their party's flags. This prompted SFI members to respond by bringing their own flags and protesting near the entrance. Police intervened promptly, dispersing both groups before further escalation could occur. Despite this, the ABVP group proceeded to Calcutta University, where they faced another verbal confrontation with left-wing student representatives. Bitan Islam, an SFI leader at Presidency University, condemned the actions of ABVP members, stating that while he did not oppose the organization's presence on campus, the level of violence was unacceptable. He claimed that approximately 30 to 40 individuals involved in the clashes belonged to the ABVP’s north Kolkata unit. His comments reflect growing concerns among left-leaning student groups regarding the increasing frequency of such incidents.
