A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL) has found that integrating science and religious education in a connected manner significantly enhances student engagement with science and increases interest in pursuing STEM careers. Published in the Journal of Beliefs & Values, the research reveals that when students are encouraged to explore the compatibility of science and religion, they develop more positive attitudes toward both fields and perceive science as more relevant to their lives and futures. The study involved six secondary schools in England, where teachers implemented a series of interdisciplinary lessons combining biology and religious education. These lessons were specifically designed to present science in a broader context, emphasizing its connection to societal and cultural issues. In one lesson, students imagined a scenario involving a new strain of avian influenza and were tasked with role-playing different stakeholders, such as farmers, government scientists, and animal rights advocates, to examine how scientific solutions require social and cultural acceptance to succeed. Students aged 13 to 15, totaling 1,100 participants, completed surveys before and after participating in these lessons. The results indicated a notable increase in students’ positive attitudes toward science. Those who perceived a compatibility between science and religion demonstrated higher confidence in their scientific abilities, greater interest in science, and stronger appreciation for the field’s value. Additionally, they exhibited a better understanding of why science matters to certain individuals and acknowledged the significance of religion to others. Professor Tamjid Mujtaba, lead author of the study and researcher at the UCL Institute of Education, emphasized that while science and religion are frequently depicted as opposing viewpoints, many students do not see them as fundamentally incompatible. He noted that tailored teaching methods can mitigate the sense of conflict between the two domains. “For some young people, reducing the perception that they must choose between science and their religious beliefs may make science feel more accessible and relevant,” he explained. Mujtaba further clarified that the study does not advocate for the inclusion of creationism in science curricula but rather supports discussions around such topics in a respectful and non-dismissive manner. “Our own view is not, for example, that science educators should teach creationism as a scientifically valid theory but that there is merit in allowing students to discuss it in science classrooms without being ridiculed,” he added. The research builds upon UCL’s ongoing efforts to promote constructive dialogue between individuals with diverse perspectives through initiatives like the Disagreeing Well program. Co-author Professor Michael Reiss highlighted the potential for expanding the current English school curriculum to include more cross-curricular exploration of science and religion. “Currently, there is not much scope in the English school curriculum for science to engage in this cross-curricular way, but our findings demonstrate that there are substantial benefits to creating space for students to discuss possible relationships between science and religion,” Reiss stated. By fostering environments where students can critically examine the intersections between science and religion, educational institutions may empower more young people, especially those with religious backgrounds, to view science as a viable and welcoming academic and professional path. The study underscores the importance of inclusive and integrative approaches to science education, offering a promising model for enhancing student motivation and career aspirations in STEM fields.
