A teacher in England has been banned indefinitely from teaching after being found to have engaged in inappropriate behavior with students, including playing with their hair and making personal comments. Anthony Hook, 66, worked at Wright Robinson College in Manchester between 2016 and 2019. During this time, he was reported for multiple incidents involving students, leading to disciplinary action by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA). According to reports, Mr. Hook touched the hair of several pupils, plaited it, and even commented on one student's makeup, calling it “lippy.” These actions reportedly made some students feel uncomfortable. In a police interview, Mr. Hook admitted to making such remarks, stating that commenting on someone's appearance was consistent with his personality. He also sang a song expressing affection for one student, which the pupil described as “a bit uncomfortable and weird.” Another student recalled that Mr. Hook had called them “so beautiful” during years 7 and 9, causing them to request a change in class groups due to discomfort. Additionally, a pupil reported that Mr. Hook had written “I love Mr Hook” with a heart in their planner, leaving them feeling “scared.” This incident prompted the student to inform their mother. The TRA noted that Mr. Hook had previously received a formal warning in 2015 from school management regarding his conduct, following complaints from students and staff. Despite this, he continued his behavior, which included repeated physical contact with students and verbal comments that crossed professional boundaries. In his statement, Mr. Hook denied having any sexual intent behind his actions, insisting he was not attempting to groom anyone but rather sought a friendly relationship with his students. However, the TRA panel concluded that his actions significantly blurred professional boundaries and posed a risk to student safety and well-being. The TRA emphasized that professionals must uphold high standards and maintain appropriate boundaries in interactions with students. Failure to do so can have serious consequences, as seen in this case. The panel expressed concern over Mr. Hook’s lack of insight into the severity of his actions and their impact on both students and the teaching profession. Mr. Hook has been prohibited from working in classrooms indefinitely. He may seek to have this restriction lifted after a two-year period. The decision underscores the importance of maintaining clear professional boundaries and ensuring the safety and comfort of all students within educational settings.
