Tata Elxsi, Sarla Aviation join hands to develop air taxi

Tata Elxsi, the design and technology services unit of the Tata Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Bengaluru-based advanced air mobility company Sarla Aviation to develop an air taxi designed to carry up to six passengers and a pilot. The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which outlines the joint efforts to bring forward a new generation of urban air transportation solutions. According to the agreement, Tata Elxsi will provide its extensive engineering expertise to support Sarla Aviation's Shunya platform. This includes contributions in areas such as avionics, flight-control systems, software integration, testing, verification, validation, and certification processes. Sarla Aviation, on the other hand, will spearhead the overall design and development of the aircraft, including the crucial step of obtaining type certification. The partnership aims to leverage both entities' strengths to create a cutting-edge air taxi solution tailored for modern urban mobility challenges. The Shunya project is designed for flight operations extending beyond 300 kilometers, combining the advantages of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) with the fuel efficiency of fixed-wing cruise flight. This hybrid approach allows the aircraft to operate independently of traditional runways, significantly enhancing its operational flexibility and propulsion efficiency. Such capabilities position the air taxi as a viable alternative for short-haul travel within densely populated urban centers. The collaboration also encompasses exploring opportunities in sensor-fusion-based navigation software, industrial and structural design, and airworthiness testing.
