Taronga Zoo breeds rare snail back from brink of extinction

Taronga Zoo has successfully bred the rare Campbell's keeled glass snail, Advena campbellii, which was previously thought to be extinct for over 30 years. The snail was rediscovered in 2020 by Norfolk Islander Mark Scott and confirmed by researcher Isabel Hyman. Due to the extremely low population in the wild—fewer than 50 individuals—a conservation program was launched in 2021 involving multiple organizations. The project faced significant challenges, including the snails' unique dietary needs and their unfamiliarity with captive environments. Despite setbacks, such as one snail dying during transport and others refusing to eat, the snails eventually began reproducing, with new offspring emerging from their 'neck' every four to six days.
