Taras Kachka named Ukraine’s new ambassador to the EU

Brussels, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday that Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s former deputy prime minister responsible for European integration, has been appointed as the country’s new ambassador to the European Union. The announcement marks a strategic shift within Kyiv’s leadership structure, as Kachka replaces Vsevolod Chentsov, who will assume the role of deputy prime minister overseeing EU-related affairs. This personnel change is part of broader administrative adjustments made during the ongoing conflict with Russia, including the recent dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which led to public demonstrations in multiple Ukrainian cities. Kachka’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Ukraine’s efforts to secure closer ties with the EU. He has extensive experience in navigating the complexities of Kyiv’s accession process, having previously managed negotiations aimed at aligning Ukraine with EU standards and policies. His tenure as deputy prime minister saw him engage directly with EU officials and diplomats, advocating for Ukraine’s interests in discussions surrounding economic cooperation, rule of law reforms, and security guarantees. In early July, Kachka was present in Brussels for the launch of a new negotiating “cluster,” a formal stage in the EU’s accession process. This development followed a prolonged diplomatic effort by Ukraine to overcome obstacles posed by Hungary, which had historically withheld support for Ukraine’s EU integration. Hungary finally lifted its longstanding veto in late June, allowing the first cluster to proceed. However, despite these advances, Ukraine has yet to initiate all six required negotiation clusters, as lingering concerns from certain member states continue to delay progress. According to statements released by Kachka earlier this month, he expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of urgency among some EU nations. Nevertheless, he emphasized his commitment to addressing these challenges, particularly through collaboration with Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán. Kachka noted that there persists a degree of political inertia and societal prejudice in Hungary regarding the treatment of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. He stated that the goal is to demonstrate that Ukraine’s EU integration does not compromise the rights of Hungarians living within the country. Zelenskky’s official message highlighted Kachka’s capabilities, stating that the president believed the diplomat would handle the responsibilities of the ambassadorial post efficiently. In addition to representing Ukraine at the EU level, Kachka will also serve as the nation’s trade representative to the bloc, further expanding his role in shaping bilateral relations. Ukrainian officials remain optimistic about future developments, though they acknowledge that the path to EU membership remains fraught with political hurdles. While the opening of the first negotiation cluster represents a symbolic victory, the broader challenge lies in securing consensus among all EU members.
