Table Media: Michael Bröcker is leaving the Berlin media start-up

Michael Bröcker, the chief editor of Table Media, a Berlin-based media startup, has announced his departure from the company. According to Axel Springer SE, Bröcker will take on a new role as the overarching political editor for the Premium Group, which includes the German editions of Politico and Business Insider, as well as the Welt-group. He will also assume the editor-in-chief position at Politico Deutschland. The move follows earlier reports by the online platform Medieninsider. The exact timing of Bröcker’s transition remains unclear. Axel Springer stated he would join the editorial team “as soon as possible.” This comes after it was previously revealed that Helene Bubrowski, who co-led Table Media as deputy editor-in-chief, is moving to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) to become its editor-in-chief. Only Till Hoppe, who had served as a member of the editorial board, remains in the leadership structure. Bröcker succeeds Gordon Repinski in his new role. Both had previously worked together at The Pioneer, a publication that merged with Politico in 2023. Repinski is set to take on a newly created position as international political anchor within the Premium Group. Additionally, Annett Meiritz, a correspondent for Handelsblatt since November 2017, will move to Politico Deutschland to serve as deputy editor-in-chief. She previously worked for SPIEGEL among other publications. Table Media, founded in 2019 by former Tagesspiegel editor-in-chief Sebastian Turner, specializes in newsletters and podcasts. It has been described as one of the few successful media startups in Germany, despite the challenges faced by the industry. Turner recently wrote in a guest column for SPIEGEL that while starting new media ventures has never been easier or cheaper, very few have succeeded. He argued against subsidies for newspaper delivery, suggesting they were not the solution to the broader issues facing journalism. Turner has yet to find a successor for the now-thinned editorial leadership at Table Media, according to Medieninsider. His departure leaves the company with a significantly reduced editorial team, raising questions about its future direction. With Bröcker’s move to the Premium Group, Table Media faces the challenge of maintaining its journalistic output under a new leadership structure.
