The outbreak, caused by the Andean strain of hantavirus, infected thirteen people and resulted in three deaths. Over 650 contacts were monitored across 33 countries. Hantavirus typically spreads from rodents through inhalation of contaminated particles, leading to symptoms like fever, extreme fatigue, muscle pain, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, and shortness of breath. Symptoms usually appear between two and four weeks after exposure but can occur up to a month later, necessitating a lengthy isolation period for passengers.
