A pig plague is ravaging Serbia, a scheduled emergency meeting, 27,000 pigs killed

Since the beginning of 2026, over 27,000 pigs have been euthanized in Serbia due to African swine fever, according to Serbian Minister of Agriculture Dragan Glamočić. The outbreak has led to an extraordinary situation in areas such as Ruma, Obrenovac, and Sremska Mitrovice, with more municipalities expected to be affected soon. The minister noted that the majority of outbreaks are occurring at the borders of the Srijem and Mačva districts and within Belgrade, regions where many pig farmers operate. He emphasized that wild pigs are also involved and warned that people are releasing pigs outside their farms despite regulations. Stricter controls and penalties are being implemented to prevent further spread. A high-level crisis meeting has been scheduled in the Serbian government to address the situation, involving top officials including the president’s office, prime minister’s representatives, and local authorities. As of July 9, the disease has been confirmed in 496 farms across 18 municipalities and eight administrative districts. Over €211,000 has been paid to owners of euthanized animals.
