On June 29th each year, Christians around the world celebrate the feast day of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, two of the most significant figures in early Christianity. This day marks their martyrdom, which is believed to have occurred on the same date, though possibly not in the same year. Both saints played pivotal roles in the establishment and growth of the Church, earning them the title of "princes of the apostles." The celebration of this feast dates back to the beginning of the fourth century, making it one of the oldest Christian feasts still observed today.

Saint Peter was born around 1 BCE in Bethsaida in Galilee and died as a martyr between the years 64 and 68 in Rome, where he was crucified upside down. He hailed from Bethsaida, located on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. By profession, he was a fisherman, and ethnically Jewish. His father was named John, hence his original name was Simon, son of John. Jesus gave him the name Peter, meaning "rock," signifying his role as the foundation upon which the Church would be built. Saint Peter had a brother named Andrew, who was also a fisherman.

He lived in Capernaum and was married. Evangelists mention how Jesus healed his mother-in-law. When Jesus called Peter to be one of his disciples, both Peter and his wife joined him. Jesus entrusted Peter with the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and named him "Rock" (Latin: Petrus, Peter), upon whom he would build his Church.

Saint Peter is also known for denying Jesus three times during the Passion, but unlike Judas Iscariot, he wept bitterly after realizing his betrayal. After the Ascension of Christ, Peter played a decisive role in the early Church. He was instrumental in the election of Matthias to replace Judas Iscariot as an apostle. At Pentecost, he delivered a speech to the crowd, proclaiming Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecies. This speech can be considered the first catechism of the universal Church.

Saint Peter accepted the first Gentile convert into the Church, Cornelius the centurion. He held the main voice at the Council of Jerusalem, where it was decided that new Christians should not be burdened with the requirements of the Mosaic Law. For a time, Peter lived in Antioch and in the regions of Asia Minor. Around the year 30, he became the first Roman bishop, a position now known as the Pope.

During Nero's persecution of Christians (between 64 and 68 CE), Peter was condemned to death by crucifixion. Feeling unworthy to die in the same way as Jesus, he requested to be crucified upside down. This took place near Nero’s Circus, where he was later buried. Today, the site is occupied by the Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican City, where his relics are housed beneath a powerful baldachin designed specifically to highlight the holiness of Saint Peter.

Saint Peter is widely revered, and there are many churches dedicated to him around the world. Perhaps the most famous are the Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican City and the Basilica of Saint Peter in Chains in Rome, where one can view Michelangelo’s sculpture of Moses with the rod. In Slovenia, several churches are dedicated to Saint Peter, including the Church of Saint Peter and Paul in Ptuj, where the feast day attracts visitors from near and far, accompanied by a parish blessing.

The attributes associated with Saint Peter include heavenly keys, a book, a mantle, papal vestments, and a rooster. He is the patron saint of masons, fishermen, carpenters, bakers, butchers, and others. It is interesting to note that Peter is said to have been the name of over 500 saints. In Slovenia, the name Peter is given to 11,355 men, ranking it tenth among male names and fourteenth overall. The name Petra is given to 9,064 women.

Saint Paul, originally known as Saul of Tarsus, was born around 10 CE in Tarsus in Asia Minor. He was a Jew and a Pharisee who persecuted Christians before his conversion. Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus, leading to his transformation from a persecutor of the Church to its apostle. This event is commemorated on January 25th. Paul inherited a religious fervor and Roman citizenship from his parents, along with knowledge of the Holy Scripture from teachers in his hometown and particularly in Jerusalem, notably Gamaliel. Despite being physically weak, he was strong in spirit and will, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his mission.

With these qualities, Paul accomplished extraordinary missionary work, surpassing even the other apostles. On his three missionary journeys, he traveled nearly all of the known world at the time. He always began by addressing his fellow Jews, often facing negative responses, then turned to the Gentiles. Throughout his travels, he endured much hardship, as recorded in 2 Corinthians 11:16-33. His greatest contribution was spreading the teachings of Christ beyond the borders of Judea, reaching the hearts of many and laying the groundwork for the spread of Christianity throughout the ancient world.
