West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced sweeping changes to the state’s sports infrastructure and governance on National Sports Day, citing the controversial Lionel Messi event at Yuva Bharati Stadium in December 2025 as a catalyst for reform. During a ceremony in Kolkata, Adhikari vowed to refund the ticket money of approximately 33,000 fans who attended the event, which turned into a chaotic spectacle due to overcrowding and poor management. He also outlined plans to allocate ₹400 crore for sports in the current fiscal year and to construct indoor stadiums in all 294 assembly constituencies. The Messi event, held on December 13, 2025, drew widespread criticism for its disorganisation. During his speech, Adhikari criticized the prior administration for neglecting the sports sector, pointing out that the paperwork for many athletes who received appointment letters during the event had been delayed for over a decade. He noted that while neighboring states such as Odisha, Jharkhand, and Haryana had produced successful athletes, West Bengal had lagged behind due to a lack of proper systems and political will. The new government has set ambitious targets for the sports sector, including the allocation of ₹400 crore for the current fiscal year. This amount, however, covers only eight months of the year, as the government has been in power for just 110 days. Adhikari mentioned that the funds would be used to improve existing sports facilities and to build new ones, particularly focusing on constructing indoor stadiums equipped with tennis courts, badminton courts, and gymnasiums in each of the 294 assembly constituencies. The plan includes building 100 new stadiums within the current year, acknowledging that completing all 294 within a single year is impractical. Existing stadiums, according to Adhikari, are in a deteriorated condition, underscoring the need for urgent investment in sports infrastructure. In addition to infrastructure improvements, Adhikari stressed the importance of removing political influence from sports organizations and federations. He argued that sports bodies should not be controlled by politicians, and that MPs and MLAs should not hold positions of authority within these institutions.
