Surigao City authorities monitor sunken vessel off Balibayon coast

A sunken vessel, MV John Roger, was discovered off the coast of Barangay Balibayon in Surigao City after failing to be salvaged by the Philippine Coast Guard. The ship initially ran aground in December 2021 due to damage from Super Typhoon Odette. In January 2024, local authorities declared it a navigational hazard, prompting coordination with national maritime agencies. Water quality tests conducted in early 2024 found no oil spill, but further monitoring continued until late 2025. Despite multiple attempts, including a salvage operation in May 2025, the vessel remained unrecovered. On June 25, 2026, the city learned the ship had sunk approximately 600 meters from its original position, raising concerns about potential environmental contamination. Fishermen suggested the vessel might have sunk earlier, and ongoing water testing is underway to assess any ecological impact.
