Shooting death toll rises in Thailand; student kills his grandparents and teachers

Authorities in Thailand have raised the death toll from a shooting at a school near Bangkok to nine following confirmation of a student’s death, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the country in nearly four years. The incident occurred on Friday at Debsirin School in Nonthaburi province, approximately 15 kilometers north of the capital. A 14-year-old male student, armed with a gun, opened fire inside the school, killing his two grandparents, several teachers, and other staff members before taking his own life in one of the classrooms. The victim was identified as a student in the first year of primary education, known as “Mattayom 1,” typically for children aged 12 to 13. The school released a statement on its social media accounts expressing condolences for the loss of its student, who had been studying in the early stages of primary school. It also shared a black-and-white photograph of the five teachers and workers who lost their lives during the attack. The school expressed hope that the deceased would rest in peace and offered support to the family. The authorities confirmed that all victims died from gunshot wounds, primarily from a single shot to a vital organ, including the two grandparents who were killed earlier in the day at the student’s home. The attack has sparked renewed discussions about firearm ownership in Thailand, where access to weapons is relatively easy, particularly among military and police personnel. According to data from the Small Arms Survey, there are approximately 15.14 firearms per 100 civilians in the country. The incident follows a similar attack in February this year, when a man entered a school in Hat Yai and killed the principal. This latest tragedy marks the second such occurrence in the country this year and is the worst since October 2022, when an ex-police officer killed 34 people, including 22 children and a pregnant teacher, in a daycare center in Uthai Sawan, northeastern Thailand. Police investigations revealed that the suspect, a teenager, had previously accessed videos online showing attacks on schools in the United States. His motive remains under investigation, though officials have noted that he reportedly suffered from academic stress due to pressure from his grandfather, a retired teacher, to achieve high grades. The police have interviewed the parents of the shooter and are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack. Forensic experts confirmed that the weapon used belonged to the suspect’s grandfather, suggesting possible familial access to firearms. The government has condemned the violence, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul describing the attack as “carefully planned.” He emphasized the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents, while acknowledging the challenges of addressing mental health issues among youth.
