A new study analyzing over 12 million death certificates has revealed an unexpected risk associated with two specific professions, flight attendants and pilots, who face a higher likelihood of dying from cancer linked to radiation exposure. The research, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, highlights a potential link between frequent air travel and certain types of cancer, particularly those known to be influenced by radiation exposure. The findings come from a comprehensive analysis conducted by American researchers who examined data from more than 12 million death records. These records included information about the deceased’s occupations, allowing scientists to compare mortality rates among different professions. The focus was on cancers known to have a connection to radiation exposure, including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, skin cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, and central nervous system tumors. Among the more than 500 occupations analyzed, flight attendants and pilots showed the highest proportion of deaths related to these forms of cancer. According to the study's lead author, Vishal Patel from Harvard Medical School, flight attendants had approximately a 50 percent higher chance of dying from such cancers compared to the general working population. Pilots faced a 36 percent increased risk. For flight attendants, around 6.9 percent of all deaths were attributed to these cancer types, while for pilots, the figure stood at 6.7 percent. In contrast, the rate among the general working population was roughly five percent. Researchers noted that both groups did not show an elevated risk of dying from cancers unrelated to radiation exposure. This distinction supports the possibility that the observed increase in cancer-related deaths is tied specifically to occupational radiation exposure rather than lifestyle factors or socioeconomic conditions. Australian experts Catherine Olsen and Ken Karipidis, who were not involved in the study, commented that this finding reinforces the idea that the excess cases could indeed be connected to professional exposure rather than other variables. However, the study does not establish a direct causal relationship. Researchers emphasized that they lacked data on the exact levels of radiation each individual pilot or flight attendant was exposed to. There is also the possibility that some occupational information on death certificates might be inaccurate or incomplete. Additionally, the nature of work in aviation, characterized by night shifts, irregular schedules, and frequent crossing of time zones, could independently affect health outcomes, even if not directly related to radiation. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledges that members of flight crews are exposed to ionizing radiation during their work but has not established national limits for exposure levels nor mandated systematic monitoring. “What you don’t measure, you can’t manage,” Patel remarked, underscoring the need for better tracking and regulation of radiation exposure in the industry. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents about 55,000 flight attendants, stated that the research underscores the importance of addressing these risks. She called for further investigation into the long-term effects of radiation exposure and the implementation of protective measures for workers in the aviation sector. The study adds to growing concerns about the health impacts of prolonged exposure to cosmic radiation, which becomes more pronounced at high altitudes due to reduced atmospheric shielding. While previous studies have suggested a possible link between frequent flying and cancer risk, this latest research provides more robust evidence, prompting calls for greater attention to occupational safety standards in aviation. Researchers are urging regulatory bodies to consider implementing stricter guidelines and monitoring systems to ensure that workers in high-exposure environments receive adequate protection. They also emphasize the need for continued research to fully understand the long-term implications of radiation exposure in the context of occupational health.
