A new study has revealed a surprising link between understanding artificial intelligence (AI) and heightened fears of job loss. According to research conducted by the Technical University of Darmstadt, individuals with advanced knowledge of AI are more anxious about their employment prospects than those with limited familiarity with the technology. The findings challenge previous assumptions that concerns over automation stem primarily from ignorance rather than awareness. The survey, carried out in collaboration with the polling firm YouGov, interviewed over 2,000 participants and found that nearly half, 43 percent, of respondents with “very good” AI expertise believe their jobs could be replaced by AI within the next few years. This figure contrasts sharply with the general population, suggesting that deeper engagement with AI technologies correlates with greater apprehension about its impact on employment. Professor Peter Buxmann, head of the project at the TU Darmstadt’s Department of Law and Economics, described the results as both “remarkable” and “disturbing.” He noted that those who understand AI best are also the ones most aware of its potential to disrupt traditional work roles. “Those who grasp AI’s capabilities recognize its disruptive power,” he explained. The study emphasizes that the threat of AI-driven job displacement is not confined to specific industries but depends on whether one’s work can be digitized or automated. According to Buxmann, professions such as lawyers, software developers, and social media specialists are particularly vulnerable due to the nature of their tasks. These roles often involve creating texts, analyses, reports, presentations, or code, all of which can be efficiently handled by generative AI systems. In contrast, fields like craftsmanship or healthcare appear less immediately affected, though they may still face indirect pressures from technological change. Despite the widespread adoption of AI in daily life, the study highlights a notable gap in Germany’s workforce readiness. Only 15 percent of respondents had participated in AI-related training programs, indicating a lack of preparedness among many professionals. Buxmann pointed out that while AI may create new types of jobs, the number of positions lost is likely to outweigh the gains. “Companies and policymakers must address these fears through honest communication and targeted upskilling,” he urged. The study underscores a growing divide between those who actively engage with AI and those who remain unfamiliar with its implications. Younger, better-educated, and male workers are more likely to use AI tools regularly, reinforcing existing inequalities in access to and understanding of emerging technologies. This disparity raises questions about how different groups will navigate the evolving labor market shaped by automation. Looking ahead, the researchers suggest that the focus should shift from merely reassuring workers to equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly automated world. As AI continues to reshape industries, the demand for continuous learning and adaptation will become essential for maintaining economic stability and personal security. The study serves as a call to action for both employers and governments to invest in education and transparency around the future of work.
