Meteorological data indicates that western parts of Western Australia, along with southern Queensland and parts of South Australia, are likely to face some of the warmest springs on record. These projections come amid growing concerns about the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events globally. While El Niño does not guarantee hotter and drier conditions in Australia, it certainly increases the probability of such outcomes. The current situation bears similarities to the heatwaves and wildfires observed in Europe and the United States earlier this summer. However, the underlying causes differ. In Europe and North America, record-high temperatures have been largely attributed to the direct impacts of climate change. In contrast, the primary driver of rising temperatures in Australia is the El Niño phenomenon, which exerts a significant influence on regional weather patterns. Greg Mullins, a former commissioner of Fire and Rescue New South Wales and a member of the Climate Council, expressed deep concern over the convergence of these climate drivers. He emphasized that emergency agencies are collaborating closely with the BoM to prepare for the upcoming spring bushfire outlook, which will provide critical guidance for disaster management efforts. Mullins warned that the combined effect of El Niño and the IOD could lead to sudden, severe droughts, what he referred to as "flash droughts", that rapidly elevate the risk of bushfires. BoM meteorologists noted that while the dry conditions prevailing in September are concerning, they are expected to ease in many regions by the onset of the summer season, potentially bringing above-average rainfall that could reduce fire hazards.
