In honor of the 160th anniversary of the birth of Pencho Slavaykov, discussions on his work and Bulgarian modernism took place in Kardzhali and Haskovo. The event was organized by BTA under the motto "Pencho Slavaykov Today" and aimed to highlight the enduring influence of one of Bulgaria's most significant literary figures. These discussions were part of a nationwide initiative that saw similar events held in multiple cities across the country, including Tsvetna, Samokov, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Kyustendil, and Pernik. Each gathering brought together poets, literary critics, educators, and journalists to explore Slavaykov’s legacy and its relevance today.

The discussion in Kardzhali was moderated by poet, literary scholar, and critic Yordan Eftimov, who noted that the first such event dedicated to Slavaykov had taken place in his hometown of Tsvetna on April 27, coinciding with the anniversary of his birth. He emphasized that to truly emulate Slavaykov, one must not merely imitate his style but instead strive to uphold great values. This perspective set the tone for the evening, as participants delved into the depth of Slavaykov’s contributions to literature and philosophy.

Writer, poet, novelist, publicist, and literary critic Liana Feroli described Slavaykov as a prophet and genius who inherited the Bulgarian spirit associated with perfection, ecstasy, weightlessness, and the pursuit of the unattainable. She referenced his famous poem "Krvava pesen" ("Bloody Song") and highlighted the importance Slavaykov placed on the spiritual over the material. According to Feroli, many of Slavaykov’s predictions extended beyond his lifetime, suggesting a profound understanding of human destiny and the moral fabric of society. She also spoke about how Slavaykov viewed marriage not as a physical union but as a spiritual bond, describing it as a union between two souls akin to the harmony of a rose and a vine.

Feroli further discussed the challenges of introducing Slavaykov’s works to contemporary students within the current educational system. She cited the book "To" by Orlin Chukovski, which explores the experiences of a new generation raised in a world of multiple realities and identities. According to her, this generation does not conform to traditional stereotypes and will not accept them. As a result, she argued that teaching methods need to evolve to better engage young minds with the complexities of Slavaykov’s texts.

Educators from Kardzhali’s Language Gymnasium “Khristo Botev,” Nadежda Karagiozova, and from the “Yordan Yovkov” Secondary School, Rosa Nikolova and Habibe Khalibraym, addressed the issue of how Slavaykov’s work is currently taught in schools. They pointed out that dedicating only three class hours to studying a single author is insufficient to fully understand and appreciate their work. They stressed the importance of the teacher’s approach and called for more time and deeper exploration of authors like Slavaykov to foster genuine interest and knowledge among students.

A similar discussion took place in Haskovo later the same day, continuing the national conversation around Slavaykov’s legacy. These events are part of a broader effort by BTA to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Slavaykov’s birth, with plans for additional gatherings in Smolyan on June 30. In addition to these meetings, the December edition of the magazine "Lik" will be devoted entirely to Slavaykov, featuring reports from the discussions and special contributions from 160 individuals, each offering 160 words on the occasion of the anniversary.

The discussions have sparked renewed interest in Slavaykov’s work, particularly among younger generations and educators seeking ways to integrate his writings into modern curricula. Participants expressed the belief that Slavaykov’s emphasis on spiritual values and the pursuit of the sublime remains highly relevant in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world. His ability to foresee societal changes and his deep philosophical insights continue to inspire both scholars and the general public alike.

As the events continue across the country, they serve as a reminder of the lasting impact of Slavaykov’s literary and intellectual contributions. Educators and cultural institutions are now tasked with finding innovative ways to ensure that future generations can appreciate and learn from his work. With upcoming discussions planned in Smolyan and other locations, the celebration of Slavaykov’s life and legacy appears poised to continue well into the coming months.
