European gymnastics postponed the decision on the Russian and Belarusian national symbols

The European Gymnastics Federation has postponed its decision on whether Russian and Belarusian athletes will continue competing under their national flags and anthems during competitions organized under its auspices. This comes after an extraordinary online congress held by representatives of member federations, where discussions did not lead to a resolution. Instead, they have opted to await the stance of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), which is expected to address the issue in the coming days.

The situation arose following the organizers of the World Challenge Cup in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, who refused to comply with FIG's instructions and did not allow the use of the Russian flag and anthem. As a result, the Russian national team withdrew from the competition. The Russian federation cited "serious violations of the rules" by the organizers as the reason for this decision.

In May, FIG decided to lift restrictions imposed more than two years ago following the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022. This allowed gymnasts from Russia and Belarus once again to compete under their national symbols. The first competition to apply this decision was the European Championships in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in Varna.

The European Gymnastics Federation will make a final decision on whether to revert to the previous regime—whereby Russian and Belarusian competitors would not be allowed to display their national flags and anthems—at an upcoming extraordinary online congress scheduled for August 3.

The controversy surrounding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competitions has been ongoing since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. Initially, many sports organizations imposed bans on these countries' teams due to their involvement in the war. However, FIG later revised its policy, allowing the use of national symbols under certain conditions.

This change sparked debate among various stakeholders within the gymnastics community. Some argued that allowing the use of national symbols could send a message of support for the actions of Russia and Belarus in the conflict. Others contended that it was important to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair treatment for all participants, regardless of political circumstances.

The situation became particularly contentious when the organizers of the World Challenge Cup in Romania failed to follow FIG guidelines regarding the use of national symbols. This led to the withdrawal of the Russian team and raised questions about the enforcement of such decisions at the local level.

As the European Gymnastics Federation awaits FIG's official position, there remains uncertainty about how the issue will be resolved. The outcome of the upcoming congress on August 3 will determine whether the current policy allowing the use of national symbols by Russian and Belarusian athletes continues or if stricter measures will be reintroduced.

The decision carries significant implications for both the athletes and the broader sporting community. It affects not only the visibility and recognition of Russian and Belarusian gymnasts but also the perception of the governing bodies responsible for ensuring fair and consistent application of rules across international competitions. With the upcoming meeting, all eyes are on the European Gymnastics Federation as it seeks to navigate this complex and politically sensitive issue.
