Bastian Schweinsteiger and Oliver Kahn said that the focus of Germany's World Cup fiasco should be on the players, not the coach.

Philippe Stern, who passed away at the age of 88, was a pivotal figure in the world of high-end watchmaking. As the heir of Patek Philippe, one of the most prestigious watch manufacturers globally, he played a crucial role in saving Swiss watchmaking during the so-called "quartz crisis" and also established luxury watches as symbols of status. Born in Geneva in 1938, Stern came from a family deeply rooted in the watch industry. His grandfather, Charles Stern, and his uncle, Jean Stern, were responsible for supplying Patek Philippe with clock parts and helped save the company from bankruptcy during the Great Depression in 1932. From then on, the company remained private and is today one of the few independent Swiss watchmakers still standing.

As part of the third generation of the Stern family to lead Patek Philippe, Stern introduced new models that pushed the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking. He was also the one who brought handcrafted watches worth $40,000 into the market, establishing them as symbols of prestige, often referred to as "a Mercedes for the wrist," according to the New York Times. In doing so, he helped build a market of passionate collectors who sought these products through magazines and specialized websites.

According to Italian Watch Spotter, Stern was the guardian of a vision that shaped the entire modern watchmaking industry. Indeed, during the 1970s, Swiss watchmaking faced the "quartz crisis" following the introduction of the first electronic wristwatch using a quartz crystal oscillator by Japanese manufacturer Seiko in 1969. These watches were far more accurate than the mechanical ones produced by traditional Swiss watchmakers, putting them at risk of becoming obsolete overnight. As quartz watches from Japan and America dominated the market, employment in Swiss companies dropped sharply between 1970 and the end of the 1980s.

The surviving brands shifted their focus towards the more luxurious segment of the market, promoting craftsmanship and the prestige of a mechanical watch priced in thousands of dollars. Stern, who became CEO of Patek Philippe in 1977, was one of the main architects of this revival of the industry, according to the New York Times.

The identity of the company was encapsulated in its slogan from 1996: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” Stern was the one who promoted the Nautilus, which was first released in 1976 and remains today the most famous model of Patek Philippe. The rounded octagonal shape of the watch, resembling the hull of a superyacht, is said to have been inspired by Stern's passion for sailing.

In 2009, Philippe Stern handed over the presidency of the company to his son, Thierry. In 2014, Forbes estimated that the Stern family had a total wealth of about $3 billion.

Philippe Stern’s legacy extends beyond the watch industry. He was instrumental in transforming Patek Philippe into a symbol of timeless elegance and craftsmanship. Under his leadership, the brand not only survived but thrived amidst technological challenges, ensuring its place as a leader in the luxury watch sector. His influence can be seen in the enduring appeal of Patek Philippe watches, which continue to attract collectors and connoisseurs around the world.

His contributions to the industry were not limited to innovation and marketing. Stern understood the emotional value of timepieces, recognizing that they were not just instruments for measuring time but also heirlooms meant to be cherished across generations. This philosophy was reflected in the company's approach to design and production, where each watch was crafted with meticulous attention to detail and quality.

The impact of Stern’s work continues to resonate within the watchmaking community. His strategies helped preserve the tradition of Swiss watchmaking while adapting to changing consumer preferences. By emphasizing the artistry and heritage behind each creation, he ensured that Patek Philippe would remain relevant and respected in an ever-evolving market.

As the successor to the Stern family’s legacy, Thierry now carries forward the values instilled by his father. With the global demand for luxury goods showing no signs of slowing down, the future of Patek Philippe appears secure under his guidance. The company's continued success will depend on maintaining the balance between tradition and innovation, much like it did during the quartz crisis under Philippe Stern’s leadership.

Looking ahead, the watch industry faces new challenges, including digital advancements and shifting consumer behaviors. However, the principles that guided Patek Philippe through past crises—craftsmanship, heritage, and exclusivity—are likely to remain central to its strategy. As long as these values are upheld, the legacy of Philippe Stern will endure, shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking for years to come.

Paraguayan football legend Roque Santa Cruz: "Germany has weaknesses"
