The death toll from the earthquake in Venezuela has exceeded 5,000

Two devastating earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela at the end of last month, followed by over 1,000 aftershocks. According to official reports, more than 5,000 people have died, with the highest number of fatalities recorded in coastal regions. Over 16,740 individuals were injured, though most have since been discharged from hospitals. Approximately 20,000 people remain homeless, living in overcrowded camps lacking adequate water supply and sanitation systems. In response, Venezuela received $346 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for post-earthquake recovery efforts. The funds are intended to support affected families with housing, infrastructure, and essential public services. The IMF has allowed Venezuela access to these resources without conditions or interest charges. Additionally, Venezuela holds over $5 billion in special drawing rights (SDRs) from the IMF, which had previously been frozen due to non-recognition of former President Nicolas Maduro. Following the U.S. military intervention against Maduro in January, the IMF and World Bank announced plans to reestablish relations with Venezuela, which had been suspended since 2019.
