The death toll from the earthquake in Venezuela has exceeded 6,000

The number of deaths caused by two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela at the end of June has surpassed 6,000, according to a report from the president of the parliament in Caracas, Jorge Rodriguez. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, were followed by over a thousand smaller aftershocks. The most affected area was the federal state of La Guaira, north of the capital, Caracas. In addition to over 6,000 fatalities, nearly 17,000 people were injured, with thousands still missing. Around 24,000 people are currently living in temporary shelters in La Guaira and Caracas. The World Bank estimated direct damages in the country to be at least $1.96 billion.
