Numerous robberies on the Slovenian coast: Strangers steal bags from the beach, even break into a hotel room

Police have confirmed multiple thefts along Slovenia’s coast over the weekend, with unknown perpetrators stealing bags and even breaking into hotel rooms. The incidents occurred primarily in Portorož and Izola, two popular seaside towns known for their tourist attractions and lively beach culture. The first incident took place on Friday afternoon, shortly after four o’clock, when police were alerted to a theft on the beach in Portorož. An unidentified individual stole two wallets from a bag left unattended on a sunbed, which had been covered with a towel and clothing. The total damage amounted to approximately 600 euros, and authorities are investigating whether this constitutes a criminal offense. On Saturday, another theft was reported in the same area, followed by two separate incidents in Izola. A 76-year-old woman left her bag on the beach in Portorož, covering it with a towel and clothing. Upon returning, she found the bag missing, having lost two mobile phones, sunglasses, corrective glasses, and a dress. The estimated financial loss was around 600 euros. In Izola, a 56-year-old Slovak citizen left a backpack on the beach, stepping away to swim. After about 15 minutes, she returned to find the bag gone. Inside were a wallet containing 300 euros in cash, a bank card, a health insurance card, a mobile phone, and keys to an apartment. The total material loss was approximately 500 euros. Later in the evening, police were informed of a break-in at a hotel room in Izola. An unknown person entered the room at Hotel San Simon and stole two bags. Among the stolen items were travel documents. The estimated damage from this incident was around 2,000 euros. All cases remain under investigation by local authorities. The thefts have raised concerns among residents and tourists alike, particularly given the high volume of visitors during the summer season. Beachgoers are being urged to keep valuables secure and to remain vigilant. Local businesses have also expressed disappointment, noting the impact on customer confidence and the potential for negative publicity. Authorities are currently reviewing all available evidence and have not yet identified any suspects. They are working closely with hotel staff and security personnel to gather more information.
