Stauffenberg memorial: Bonhoeffer successor Tobias Korenke is damaged by AfD wreath

At a government commemoration marking the failed July 20, 1944, attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler, a heated incident occurred involving a wreath placed by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary faction. During the ceremony at the Bendlerblock memorial site in Berlin, Tobias Korenke, a descendant of theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, attempted to remove the wreath, leading to a confrontation with security personnel. According to reports from the German news agency dpa, the clash resulted in damage to the wreath. Korenke told dpa that many descendants, including himself, felt a deep sense of outrage at seeing the AfD lay wreaths at such a solemn occasion. He stated that his family would not accept this practice. A spokesperson for the AfD’s parliamentary group confirmed that the party had prepared a wreath for the remembrance session but could not confirm whether members were present. Götz Frömming, head of the association for the history of the faction, noted that the party was invited to these official commemorations as a representative political force. The main speech at the event was delivered by Federal Family Minister Karin Prien, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She emphasized her role as both a citizen and a descendant of victims and survivors of Nazi persecution, referencing her grandmother's murder in the Sobibor extermination camp. Prien highlighted the importance of civic responsibility in sustaining democracy, stating that it is rooted in an ethic of personal accountability rather than institutional support alone. She warned against allowing individuals to turn away from democratic values. Prien argued that the spirit of resistance, exemplified by the July 20 plot and other groups, reminds people that democracy depends on citizens willing to take on difficult responsibilities. She stressed that freedom and human dignity depend on current actions, saying, “The freedom of tomorrow is decided by our actions today.” She added that people are not born as heroes but learn to shoulder responsibility long before their rights and dignity are at stake. The planned ceremony included a formal oath-taking, symbolizing commitment to democratic principles. The July 20 plot, led by military officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, aimed to kill Hitler and end Nazi rule, thereby ending World War II. Despite the effort, the assassination failed, and Stauffenberg and three others were executed later that evening in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock. Their sacrifice has since become a powerful symbol of resistance against tyranny. The incident at the memorial underscores ongoing tensions over how historical memory is honored in contemporary politics. While some see the act of placing wreaths as a respectful tribute, others view it as inappropriate given the party’s controversial stance on immigration and its alignment with nationalist ideologies.
