Star-studded field and R50m upgrade set stage for 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge

The 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge is poised to become one of the most anticipated sporting events in Africa, with a revamped course, a record-breaking prize purse, and a lineup of top-tier golfers set to compete in Sun City. The tournament, widely known as “Africa’s Major,” will run from December 3 to 6, marking a significant milestone as it honors the legacy of 91-year-old South African golf legend Gary Player, who has been instrumental in shaping the event since its debut in 1981. A major overhaul of the Gary Player Country Club has already begun, with a R50 million redevelopment project initiated in June of last year. The upgrades include a redesigned 470-meter par-four 1st hole and the introduction of Sun City’s first dedicated practice range. These changes aim to elevate both the aesthetic appeal and competitive standards of the course. The prize money for the tournament has also increased significantly, with a total purse of $6 million, offering $1.2 million to the eventual winner. The initial list of participants includes notable names such as Norwegian Kristoffer Reitan, the reigning champion, along with two-time U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and English golfer Justin Rose. Local talent will also feature prominently, with rising stars Casey Jarvis and Marco Penge, who gained recognition on the DP World Tour after launching his professional career in South Africa. More players are expected to be announced in the upcoming months. Beyond the golf course, the event promises a vibrant social calendar. Amapiano artists Scorpion Kings, composed of Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, will headline the opening night at the Valley of Waves Sunbet Beach Party on Friday, December 4. On Saturday, December 5, international band +LIVE+ will perform, followed by house DJ Shimza concluding the festivities at the Sun Park Closing Party on Sunday, December 6. Tournament director Ken Payet emphasized the unique advantages of hosting the event in Sun City. He pointed out the proximity to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, home to the Big Five, making it an attractive destination for international players and their families. “We literally have the Big Five right on our doorstep,” Payet noted. “Players often bring their families, and we provide entertainment for them while they compete for a $6 million purse. Many players also use the time before or after the tournament to visit Kruger Park, Cape Town, or the Winelands.” Nedbank, the title sponsor, sees continued value in supporting the event, particularly among its high-net-worth clients and business banking segments. Kensi Nobanda, group chief marketing and corporate affairs officer at Nedbank Group, explained that the tournament aligns well with client interests and institutional partnerships. “Our high-net-worth, business banking, and corporate investment clients love golf, so it makes sense to create an experience around it for them,” she stated. Efforts to increase inclusivity were also highlighted, especially regarding women’s participation. Nobanda mentioned adjustments made to the handicap requirements for the pre-tournament Pro-Am to encourage greater female involvement. “In general, women have a higher handicap than men,” she said. “We’ve worked with the DP World Tour and Sun International to adjust the requirements so more women can participate in the Pro-Am.” From a developmental standpoint, the tournament serves as a crucial platform for emerging local players aiming to make their mark on the global stage. Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, underscored the importance of the event for nurturing talent. “This event is on our turf, and we’re an integral part of growing the game,” he said. “Our mantra is ‘Greatness Begins Here.’ For our players to compete in the largest tournament on the African continent, it’s a wonderful platform.”
