Meeting at Prežihova Baja, this time to celebrate the anniversary of the reading badge

The annual gathering at Prežihova Bajta has this year been dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the reading badge, marking a significant milestone in Slovenia’s cultural history. The event will take place on Monday, August 10, at 6 pm. Traditionally held on the birthday of Lavor Kuharj, known as Prežho Voranc, at Prežihova Bajta, the celebration has evolved to commemorate the enduring legacy of the reading badge. The reading badge, recognized by generations of readers who have engaged with it once, twice, or even more often, is currently on display at the Koroska Regional Museum alongside information about the upcoming meeting. The concept of reading for the reading badge originated in the early 1960s as an expression of the desire and need for more effective dissemination and deeper engagement with literature among young readers. It is an original Slovenian cultural movement rooted in the tradition of reading badges named after Slovenian writers. The foundation of the Prežihova reading badge was laid at Primary School Prevalje by teacher of Slovene language Stanka Kotnik and then principal and writer Leopold Suhodolčan. The first Prežihova reading badges were awarded by writer France Bevk on May 22, 1961, at Prevalje, documenting the history of the reading badge. The ceremonial guest will be Tone Partljič, a Slovenian writer, dramatist, and former president of the Association Reading Badge Slovenia, ZPMS. A conversation with the writer will be led by Darka Tancer-Kajnih. The cultural program will be co-created by musician Lucija Štrekelj (vocal) and Dejan Dimec (guitar). This gathering represents one of the traditional meetings at Prežihova Bajta, continuing a long-standing tradition that reflects the community's commitment to literacy and cultural heritage. The event underscores the importance of local initiatives in fostering educational and cultural activities within Slovenian society.
