Spotify reveals the most popular songs played during solar eclipse

Spotify has released data showing a sharp spike in the popularity of space-themed songs during the solar eclipse on 12 August. Among the most notable tracks was Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart, which saw a 94 per cent increase in UK streams and a 14 per cent rise globally. The surge came five weeks after Tyler's passing on 8 July, adding a poignant layer to the song's resurgence. The data compares streams on eclipse day with the daily average from 1–11 August, highlighting the immediate impact of the celestial event on listener behavior. The eclipse, which occurred over parts of Europe and North America, drew millions of viewers who used protective eyewear to safely observe the phenomenon. In the UK, more than 90 per cent of the sun was obscured by the Moon between approximately 6 pm and 8:15 pm, marking one of the most significant eclipses visible above UK skies since the total eclipse of 1999. Many people gathered in public spaces such as parks, beaches, and historical landmarks, creating a widespread communal experience. In addition to Total Eclipse Of The Heart, several other space-related tracks experienced notable increases in play. Rock band Evolfo's Moon Eclipsed The Sun saw a staggering 12,817 per cent rise in UK streams and 1,251 per cent globally. Chris Staples' Dark Side Of The Moon increased by 2,805 per cent among British listeners and 405 per cent internationally. Pink Floyd's Eclipse recorded a 594 per cent boost in the UK alongside a 144 per cent global increase, while Delta Goodrem's Eurovision entry, also titled Eclipse, saw a 104 per cent domestic rise and a 40 per cent global climb. Bill Withers' 1971 classic Ain't No Sunshine experienced a 17 per cent uptick in the UK and a 3 per cent global increase during the event. Spotify's senior editor, Shannon Carragher, noted the connection between major cultural events and shifts in musical preferences. She explained that moments like solar eclipses bring people together, prompting them to seek the right soundtrack for shared experiences. Whether through revisiting iconic hits or discovering lesser-known tracks with cosmic themes, the data reflects a deep reliance on music to enhance and unify people during collective moments. The event also sparked broader interest in astronomy and related media.
