The Odyssey, which has already earned $395.5 million domestically, is poised for international expansion, with planned releases in South Korea on August 5, China on August 14, and Japan on September 11. Meanwhile, other family-friendly titles filled the rest of the top five, including Toy Story 5 in third place with $6.3 million, Minions & Monsters in fourth, and Moana in fifth. These animated films maintained their popularity, drawing audiences looking for lighter fare amid the superhero spectacle. Further down the chart, Hadestown: The Musical made headlines by surpassing Hamilton to become the highest-grossing live theater capture release ever, with a cumulative total of $18.2 million. Its success underscored the growing interest in theatrical performances adapted for home viewing, especially during periods when traditional theater attendance has been limited. Industry analysts have noted that the combined impact of Spider-Man and The Odyssey could push the summer movie season past the $4 billion mark for the first time since the record-breaking Barbenheimer summer of 2023. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, suggested that the duo’s success could also contribute to the third-ever billion-dollar August, reflecting the ongoing strength of Hollywood’s summer slate.
