A new AI-based tool for preparing students for oral examinations has been introduced in Singapore, offering real-time interaction and tailored practice sessions. Developed by a local parent, the platform aims to support young learners in honing their speaking skills ahead of high-stakes assessments. The AI Oral Examiner, launched by Articulate Intelligence, allows students to engage in simulated oral exams at home. By selecting a language, English or Chinese, and choosing a topic, students interact with an AI system that listens, responds, and poses follow-up questions. Designed to mimic the pressure of actual exams, the tool encourages independent thinking and clear communication. It also provides prompts to help students expand their answers if they hesitate, without offering prewritten responses. Parents played a key role in shaping the platform’s content. They contributed preliminary exam topics based on their children’s experiences, which were then compiled into broader themes. These themes included generated images and questions to aid practice. The initiative began after founder Meng Aun Tan, a Singapore parent, struggled to assist his daughter during her PSLE oral examinations in 2024. He later tested an early version with other parents, discovering similar challenges. This led to the creation of a tool that addresses the growing reliance on AI among primary schoolchildren. According to company data, nearly 500 users have adopted the platform, with increased activity around major exam periods. The service is free for one initial topic, while additional features require paid subscriptions or credits. Beyond oral practice, Articulate Intelligence also offers AI-driven tools for essay evaluation, situational writing feedback, and preparation for other academic interviews such as the DSA process. Meng Aun Tan emphasized that the AI should complement rather than replace human guidance. “Oral exams are not just about knowing a good answer,” he stated. “Students need to think while someone is waiting, respond clearly, and keep going when they are unsure.” His goal was to provide parents with a resource that could offer consistent, immediate feedback, especially when they might not be able to assist directly. The rise of AI in education reflects broader trends in Singapore, where national studies show that 82.6% of children aged 10 to 13 have used AI tools. As these technologies become more integrated into daily life, educators and families are exploring ways to harness them effectively.
