The international airport in Malta, located roughly 220 kilometers south of Etna, was affected despite the distance. According to the Austrian news agency APA, experts believe the ash plume reached as far as Libya. Despite the challenges posed by the ash cloud, the eruption has attracted a large number of spectators. Particularly at night, crowds gather near Etna to observe explosions from the crater and the glowing lava flows emerging from fissures. According to data from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV), at least four fissures have opened so far. The situation at Catania Airport has been described as highly inconvenient for passengers. Located just about 20 miles from the crater, the airport must frequently close or halt operations due to the extreme danger posed by volcanic ash to aircraft. Social media posts highlight the frustration of travelers dealing with these disruptions, emphasizing the difficulty of navigating the current circumstances. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The company managing the airport, SAC, has indicated that the closure could be extended depending on the ongoing activity of the volcano.
